Biography

Arndt von Haeseler is a full professor for Bioinformatics at the University of Vienna and at the Medical University of Vienna. He is also the head of the Center for Integrative Bioinformatikcs Vienna (CIBIV).

Arndt obtained is PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Bielefeld (1988), he did his habilitation at the Zoology Department of the University of Munich. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern California (1989-1990). Subsequently he was a Visiting Assistant Professor for Mathematics at USC (19090-1991), a Scientific Lecturer and Senior Scientific Lecturer in the Zoology Department at the University of Munich (1991-1998). From 1998-2001 Arndt was a group leader for theoretical biology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Subsequently he became full professor for Bioinformatics at the University of Düsseldorf and Group Leader of the Bioinformatics at the Neumann Institute for Computing at the Research Center Jülich. Arndt was awarded the Vienna Science Chair for Bioinformatics from the WWTF (2005-2011) and he became the head of the CIBIV.

Arndt’s research focuses on modelling evolutionary processes. Here he is interested in mathematical models to understand sequence diversity. He develops computational efficient methods to infer phylogenetic relationships. He is interested in population genetics and applications of bionformatics tools to answer biological or medical questions. Recently he also worked on bioinformatics challenges generated by the next generation sequencing technologies.

Arndt received a PhD fellowship from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, A Honorary Professor for Theoretical Biology from the University of Leipzig, he was chairmen of the Computer Science Department of the University of Düsseldorf, he was Visiting Professor at the Division of theoretical Genetics at the National Institute of Genetics in Japan. He is also a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Science.
